ASEM Engineering Management Certification Options

Engineering management is the art and science of planning, organizing, allocating resources, and directing and controlling activities which have a technological or systems component. Engineers whose job requires them to complete projects on time and on schedule, work in teams, and assume management or leadership duties must solve complex problems that require expertise and training in these principles. To promote the practice of engineering management and to provide general standards for best practices, ASEM provides two certification options: individual professional certification and graduate degree certification.

Certified Associate in Engineering Management (CAEM) For individuals planning to enter or new to engineering, technology, and science careers.

Certified Professional in Engineering Management (CPEM)For individuals who have several years of experience involved in multiple domains of the EMBoK such as project execution, design, team activities, leadership, and management.

Professional Certification and Training

In engineering and technology fields, everyone must understand the basics in the Engineering Management Body of Knowledge (EMBoK) whether they are leading a team or department or are members of a complex project team.  Many individuals with technical and scientific degrees did not have the opportunity to take courses and develop the skills in building the bridge between technical success and the business, organizational, and people success areas. ASEM’s Engineering Management Certification programs provide the needed foundation for professional success for working and managing technical enterprises. Individuals, educational programs, professional trainers, and training organizations have the opportunity to use these certifications to validate learning and to assure value for the time investment spent. For professional development and to recognize levels of expertise, ASEM provides two professional certifications. Find out more about professional certification.

Value in ASEM's Professional CertificationMichael O'Connor, Director Strategy and Project Management for Medtronic, describes the value he has found through his membership with the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM).

Graduate Degree Certification

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of engineering and technology management related degrees and there is a need for quality and consistency benchmark.  To address this issue, to support those seeking advanced degrees in our field, ASEM certifies MS programs that meet rigorous standards of excellence.ASEM’s graduate program certification provides the following benefits for programs and their students:

Certified program graduates are also able to display their electronic badge degree credential on resumes, email, and similar digital communications.

Certified graduate programs have a competitive advantage in assuring students that they represent the highest standards in engineering and technology management professional education.

Students can be assured that a degree from an ASEM certified program contains the critical knowledge necessary for success in the field of technology and engineering management.

Graduates with a Master’s degree from an ASEM Certified Program have a direct path to professional certification as a Certified Associate in Engineering Management® (CAEM®) or a Certified Professional in Engineering Management (CPEM®)

Depending on professional experience, ASEM certified program graduates are eligible for immediate recognition as Certified Associate in Engineering Management® (CAEM®) or a Certified Professional in Engineering Management (CPEM®)

Recognition as a Certified Associate in Engineering Management® (CAEM®) or a Certified Professional in Engineering Management CPEM® allows use of an electronic badge credential on resumes, email, and similar digital communications.

Certified program graduates are eligible for reduced certification costs.

Certified programs are recognized on the ASEM Graduate Program Certification website. ASEM Certified Programs are encouraged to use the ASEM certification badge in their program literature.

About

About ASEMThe American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) is a global professional society dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the engineering and technical management profession. Engineering Management, broadly defined, is the art and science of planning, organizing, allocating resources, and directing and controlling activities that have a technological or systems component. Engineers and other technical professionals, whose job requires them to assume management duties, must solve complex problems that require expertise and training in these principles.

Who We Serve

Although our society name specifically notes engineering, ASEM’s direction encompasses the broader challenges of management of professionals who work in complex, technical organizations involving “knowledge” workers. Broadly, ASEM members cover a wide range of management areas in science and technology. In addition to engineering, these fields encompass manufacturing / operations management, the natural sciences such as biology and chemistry, and information technology including areas like computer science and information systems to mention a few.

History

Engineering Management as an academic program originated at the University of Missouri – Rolla (now Missouri S&T) in the mid-1960s. Several years later in 1979, The American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) was founded by Professor Bernard R. Sarchet, the first Chair of the Engineering Management Department at Missouri S&T, along with the support and encouragement of Chancellor Merl Baker.

Professor Sarchet is largely credited with establishing the first true engineering management department at a U.S. university, and he has two prestigious national awards named in his honor. These include the Bernard R. Sarchet Award presented by the Engineering Management Division of ASEE for lifetime achievement in engineering management education and the Bernard R. Sarchet Award presented by ASEM for the advancement and support of engineering management .

Publications

ASEM is the world leader in promoting and developing approaches and methods to improve the operational effectiveness and management of complex technical organizations. Our publications cover a wide spectrum of related topics.

Engineering Management Journal – A top-tier refereed journal designed to provide practical, pertinent knowledge on the management of technology, technical professions, and technical organizations. Indexed by Taylor and Francis.Practice Periodical – A quarterly publication of articles and information applicable to working engineering managers.International Annual Conference Proceedings - papers from the international annual conference. Indexed by ProQuest and EBSCO.A Guide to the Engineering Management Body of Knowledge - The fundamental repository of concepts, principles, procedures, and practices in the field of engineering management. The Engineering Management Handbook – A desk reference for the working engineering manager covering all aspects of engineering management.

Program Certifications

ASEM provides certification for MS degree programs to assure the quality of the degree and the coverage of needed EM topics. Please see this link for more details and for the list of Universities with certified programs:

Professional Certifications

ASEM provides engineering management professional certification programs for individuals interested in validating their knowledge and capabilities as engineering or technical managers. ASEM offers two certifications relating to various experience levels of the engineering management profession: Certified Associate in Engineering Management (CAEM) and Certified Professional in Engineering Management (CPEM).

The CAEM certification is designed for young technical professionals seeking to establish credentials in preparation for early technical management or supervisory assignments. The CPEM certification is designed for experienced technical managers seeking to validate their skills and experience with a professional certification.

These certifications are based on the A Guide to the Engineering Management Body of Knowledge.

Membership

ASEM has multiple membership categories, but the primary categories are:

Iran & JCPOA

Since 2006, the EU High Representative has led diplomatic efforts between the E3/EU+3 (China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States) and Iran, which led to the conclusion of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear program (JCPOA) in Vienna on 14 July 2015. The JCPOA is designed to ensure that Iran’s nuclear programme will be exclusively peaceful and provides for the comprehensive lifting of UN, EU and US nuclear-related sanctions.

What we do

All over the world, the EU works to prevent and resolve conflicts, to support resilient democracies, to promote human rights and sustainable development, to fight climate change, and to contribute to a rules-based global order.

EU Peace, Security and Defence

In an increasingly interconnected world, Europe’s security starts abroad. European citizens expect and deserve to live in a safe and stable environment. In the face of increased global instability, the EU needs to take more responsibility for its own security and increase its capacity to act autonomously.

Crisis Response

Crises can affect EU citizens, staff and interests outside of the EU. To protect them, the EU is strengthening its response to security and consular crises. The EEAS Crisis Response Centre contributes to this work.

Human Rights & Democracy

In a shifting geopolitical landscape, the EU has remained a strong defender of human rights. New geopolitical rivalries only serve to underline its role as a reliable and stable partner, and a champion of the rules-based international order.

Gender & Diversity

Gender equality and women’s empowerment, but also diversity in the broadest sense of the word, are political objectives and priorities of the EU in all of its internal and external policy.

Climate, Environment & Energy

Climate change and environmental degradation are an existential threat to Europe and the world. The EU promotes the approach of the European Green Deal of a just transition towards sustainable, resource-efficient and climate neutral economies and energy systems.

Multilateral relations

In today’s world marked by major geopolitical and economic power shifts, multilateralism is still the most effective means to govern global relations in a way that benefits all. The EU stands committed to a renewed multilateralism fit for the 21st century.

Migration & Forced Displacement

Migration is a global phenomenon presenting a unique set of challenges while offering substantial benefits to countries of origin and destination as well as migrants. The EU works to ensure that migration takes place in a safe, regular and sustainable manner.

EU Enlargement & Neighbourhood

The EU prioritises development and stability in the wider region and neighbourhood, working in close partnership with its neighbours to the East and South and supporting the reforms required by countries that want to become EU members.

Humanitarian & Emergency response

The European Union together with its Member States is the world’s leading humanitarian donor. New challenges, same principles, humanitarian aid is a key pillar of the EU’s external action and an important part of its ability to project its values globally.

International cooperation & partnership

The European Union, more than ever, needs to work closely with partners to face the global challenges and build together a safer, greener, more prosperous and equal world.

Cultural relations

Cultural diversity is one of the emblems of the EU and its Member States and a tool to strengthen cultural relations beyond our borders, to connect people worldwide, to share values, to improve international relations and to learn from each other’s practice.

Tackling Disinformation, Foreign Information Manipulation & Interference

Since 2015, the EU has significantly improved its capacity to tackle Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), protecting the EU’s democratic processes, security and citizens.

Global Gateway

The Global Gateway is a new European strategy to boost smart, clean and secure links in digital, energy and transport sectors and to strengthen health, education and research systems across the world.

Digital Diplomacy

Digital technologies have brought new opportunities into the lives of people around the world. They have also become key competitive parameters that can shift the balance of power. The goal of EU Digital Diplomacy is to secure the EU global role in the digital world, to protect its strategic interests and to promote its dynamic, human-centric regulatory framework for an inclusive digital transformation.

Economic relations - Trade & sustainability

In its trade relations, the EU promotes a sustainable growth model as defined by the European Green Deal and the European Digital Strategy, which can help the recovery from the COVID-19 economic crisis.

EU Sanctions

Restrictive measures, or sanctions, are one of the EU's tools to promote the objectives of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).

Science Diplomacy

Science and technology play an increasing role in the geopolitical arena.

Public Diplomacy

Building bridges between the European Union and the rest of the world

Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM)

Strategic Communications

Asia matters – for Europe. And Europe matters – for Asia. It is with this simple premise in mind that the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) was created in 1996

Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM)

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is a unique, informal platform for dialogue and cooperation between Asia and Europe on the big challenges of a fast-changing world, such as Connectivity, trade and investment, climate change, but also broad security challenges such as counter-terrorism, migration, maritime security and cyber issues. Bringing together 53 partners from across Europe and Asia, ASEM is the main multilateral platform linking Europe and Asia with significant global weight: ASEM partners represent around 65% of global GDP, 60% of global population, 75% of global tourism and 68% of global trade.

ASEM main purpose is to provide a platform to foster political dialogue, strengthen economic cooperation and tackle global challenges together. In many respects, recent developments in the international landscape have increased the value of ASEM as a key building block for an open, cooperative and rules-based international system.

ASEM is conducted as an informal and flexible process on the basis of equal partnership, mutual respect and mutual benefit. ASEM aims to promote the exchange of ideas and best practices and thus act as a breeding ground for new policy ideas. In short, ASEM is the most influential comprehensive partnership between Asia and Europe, boosting Connectivity in all its dimensions between the two regions.

ASEM leaflet and factsheet

ASEM Partners

The initial ASEM partnership which was inaugurated in Bangkok, Thailand on 1-2 March 1996 consisted of just 15 EU member states and 7 ASEAN member states plus China, Japan, Korea and the European Commission. Today ASEM comprises 51 partner countries: the 27 Member States of the European Union[1] plus Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom on the European side and the 10 ASEAN countries[2] plus Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Russia on the Asian side. It also includes two institutional partners: the European Union and the ASEAN Secretariat.

[1] Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.

[2] Association of Southeast Asian Nations: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

How it Works

ASEM works through meetings and activities organised at different levels.

The ASEM Summit is a meeting between the 51 Heads of State or Government, the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission, and the Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The summits are held every second year, alternating between Asia and Europe.

Ministerial Meetings are organised in-between the ASEM Summits, gathering ministers of foreign affairs, finance, economics, labour and employment, culture, education, transport and environment. Occasionally other ministerial conferences are held on specific issues and areas that are not covered by the main ministerial meetings.

Senior Officials' Meetings (SOM) bring together high-level civil servants from the Foreign Ministries of all ASEM partners for the overall coordination of the ASEM process. Sectoral SOMs are also held in preparation of the various Ministerial meetings.

Activities and initiatives are organised by ASEM partners on a wide range of issues of mutual interest. A full overview of all ASEM meetings can be found at the ASEM InfoBoard: http://www.aseminfoboard.org/

At the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit, which took place on 18 and 19 October 2018 in Brussels, leaders addressed the topics of connectivity and support for multilateralism under the heading "Europe and Asia: global partners for global challenges".

The next Summit will be held in Cambodia on the 25-26 November 2021. https://www.aseminfoboard.org/events/13th-asem-summit-asem13

ASEM has no secretariat. Foreign ministers and their senior officials have an overall coordinating role within the ASEM process. They are assisted in this by an informal group of coordinators: two from the Asian side (currently Singapore representing the ASEAN and Russia the non-ASEAN (NESA) countries) and two from the European side (the European External Action Service (EEAS) as the permanent coordinator and the rotating EU Presidency).

The ASEM Family

The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) is an international non-profit organisation, based in Singapore, with the aim to promote cultural ties and foster people-to-people contacts between both civil society and business leaders from the two regions.

The Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership (ASEP) promotes cooperation between parliaments in Europe and Asia and offers parliamentarians an opportunity to influence the ASEM process.

The Asia-Europe Peoples’ Forum (AEPF) is the ‘grass roots’ level of ASEM and serves as an interregional network of civil society and societal movements across Asia and Europe.

The Asia-Europe Business Forum (AEBF) aims to enhance business-to-business dialogue

and cooperation between the two regions and to provide opportunity for interaction between business and political leaders.

The Asia-Europe Labour Forum (AELF) consists of trade union centres that engage the ASEM process to make social justice and development central in the agenda of ASEM Ministers and Heads of State.

The ASEM Cultural Festival takes place each year in the sidelines of the Summits or the Foreign Ministers meetings to strengthen inter-cultural dialogue among ASEM partners.

Professional Training Program in Engineering Management Launched in the Philippines

03 Dec 2017 12:30 PM |

Anonymous

By Engr. Jesus "Jess" N. Matias, ME, CPEM, PMP

The National Engineering Center, the industry provider of engineering services of the University of the Philippines – College of Engineering will launch a training program in engineering management for practicing engineers this coming April to May 2018.

The program will introduce the engineering management body of knowledge (EMBOK) of the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) to local industry practitioners.  Philippine companies have long sought for a framework that will equip engineers and other related professionals with competencies needed to manage organizations and highly-technical processes; this new collaboration between the UP-NEC and the ASEM hopes to fulfill that need.

The program will consist of fifty-six training hours of lectures and workshops based on the ASEM EMBOK including a simulated examination for the ASEM CPEM certification.  Satisfactory completion of all requirements, as well as a passing grade in the final examination, will earn for the program participant the “Professional Certificate in Engineering Management”, a new credential which is expected to help young practicing engineers become recognized for upper management positions.

Successful completers of the program will then be highly encouraged to obtain the internationally-recognized Certified Professional in Engineering Management (CPEM) credential of the ASEM.  In order to facilitate the ASEM examination process, the UP-NEC may soon seek to become an ASEM-accredited online examination proctor.

The program is designed and will be facilitated by Engr. Jesus N. Matias, ME, CPEM, PMP, who has more than thirty years in experience in the business of construction contracting, as well as close to twenty years in lecturing experience at the UP-NEC for various training programs related to construction project management.  He is a Certified Professional in Engineering Management (ASEM), a Project Management Professional (PMI) and a practicing mechanical engineer with technical specializations in steel construction and cost engineering.  He is also a faculty member of the Institute of Civil Engineering in UP, a co-author of a textbook in Engineering Economy and an award-winning author of books on spirituality.

The University of the Philippines has long been considered the country’s premier educational institution and its College of Engineering is among the most renowned schools of engineering excellence, with unparalleled international credibility, producing many of the Philippines’ most respected names in academe, government and industry.

The American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) is an international professional society that is focused on promoting and advancing the field of Engineering Management. The subject of Engineering Management is concerned with the management of people and projects in a technological or engineering systems context.[1][2] The successful engineering manager will have the ability to manage complex programs and systems while drawing on the tools and techniques developed within the field of Engineering Management.

History[edit]

The first Engineering Management academic program was launched at the University of Missouri – Rolla (now called Missouri University of Science and Technology) in the mid-1960s.[3] A number of years later in 1979, the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) was founded by Professor Bernard R. Sarchet, who held the first Chair of the Engineering Management Department at Missouri S&T, with support provided by the university's Chancellor, Professor Merl Baker.

In recognition of Professor Sarchet's seminal impact on the field of Engineering Management, there are two prestigious awards named in his honor. These include the Bernard R. Sarchet Award in recognition for lifetime achievement in engineering management education, which is presented by the Engineering Management Division of ASEE [4] and the Bernard R. Sarchet Award in recognition for advancement of the engineering management discipline, which is presented by ASEM.[5][6][7][8][9][10]

Publications[edit]

ASEM is responsible for a number of technical publications associated with the field of Engineering Management. This includes an academic journal (Engineering Management Journal) and practitioner focused publication (Practice Periodical) as well as the Guide to the Engineering Management Body of Knowledge (EMBoK) and Engineering Management Handbook.

International Annual Conference[edit]

The ASEM International Annual Conference is held annually at different locations across the United States and includes research papers, workshops, student competitions, and other sessions related to the communication of knowledge concerned with both the academic and practitioner dimensions of Engineering Management.

About us

About ASEM

The American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) is a global professional society dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the engineering and technical management profession.

In addition to engineering, these fields encompass manufacturing / operations management, the natural sciences such as biology and chemistry, and information technology including areas such as computer science and information systems.

Publications

ASEM is the world leader in promoting and developing approaches and methods to improve the operational effectiveness and management of complex technical organizations. Our publications cover a wide spectrum of topics.

1 Engineering Management Journal: Top-tier refereed journal designed to provide practical, pertinent knowledge on the management of technology, technical professions, and technical organizations

2 Practice Periodical: Quarterly publication of articles applicable to working engineering managers

3 International Annual Conference Proceedings: Papers from the international annual conference

4 Engineering Management Body of Knowledge: Fundamental repository of concepts, principles, procedures, and practices in the field of engineering management

The Asia–Europe Meeting (ASEM) is an Asian–European political dialogue forum to enhance relations and various forms of cooperation between its partners.

It was officially established on 1 March 1996 at the 1st ASEM Summit (ASEM1) in Bangkok, Thailand, by the then 15 Member States of the European Union (EU) and the European Commission, the then 7 Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the individual countries of China, Japan, and South Korea.[2] A series of enlargements saw additional EU Member States join as well as India, Mongolia, Pakistan and the ASEAN Secretariat in 2008[citation needed], Australia, New Zealand and Russia in 2010,[3] Bangladesh, Norway, and Switzerland in 2012,[4] as well as Croatia, and Kazakhstan in 2014.

The main components of the ASEM Process rest on the following 3 pillars:

Political Pillar

Economic & Financial Pillar

Social, Cultural & Educational Pillar

In general, the ASEM Process is considered by the Partners involved to be a way of deepening the relations between Asia and Europe at all levels, which is deemed necessary to achieve a more balanced political and economic world order. The process is enhanced by the biennial meetings of Heads of State and Government, alternately in Asia and Europe, and biennial meetings of Foreign Ministers as well as other Ministerial Meetings, and other political, economic, and socio-cultural events at various levels.

Partners[edit]

The ASEM Partnership currently has 53 Partners: 51 countries and 2 regional organisations. The countries are Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Kingdom and Vietnam while the European Union and the ASEAN Secretariat are the regional organisations involved.[1]
